Intel Aims To Bring PC To Developing Nations
CNET estimates that the number of PC users is expected to hit or exceed 1 billion by 2010, up from around 660 million to 670 million today, fueled primarily by new adopters in developing nations such as China, Russia and India. This is very understandable given how expensive PCs are and how poor most of the world’s population is.
A lot of companies are working to make the PC cheaper. Intel is one of those companies. They are providing funding and research facilities to the OLPC and they’ve recently announced their own PC aimed at the developing world. It’s called the Classmate PC.
The Classmate PC currently ranges in price from $220 to $300. That still sounds ridiculously expensive for the 1 billion or so people that make under $1000 a year. But, the Classmate might not be targeting this group. According to CNET, of the 4.7 billion people who make between $1,000 and $25,000, only 10 percent have access to a computer. They are probably most definitely targeting this $1,000 to $25,000 group.
