Fundraising Updates for Andrew’s DNA Test

by Andrew Meyer on December 6, 2007

23chromosomes1881.jpgAs I said in my previous post I’m trying to raise $999 by Christmas for 23andMe’s Personal Genome Service. That’s the amount I need before I can purchase their Saliva Collection Kit.

TechCrunch gave my genome-decoding campaign a holler yesterday with Mike’s own 23andMe post. It gave me a nice start.

I will keep everyone updated with my fundraising efforts throughout the campaign. You’ll be able to find donations updates below:

The first 24 hours went very well. I raised just under $200 in the first 24 hours. If I can do four more days like that than I will be set.

Thanks to everyone who sent me donations via the PayPal storefront widget. You made a great investment. :)

Donation Update (12/8/2007): I still need to raise about $800 more. I still have 17 more days until Christmas.

Donation Update (12/12/2007): I have raised $283 so far. I’m currently trying to get some biotech company sponsors.

Donation Update (12/19/2007): I now have raised $380. Thanks to everyone who has donated!

Donation Update (12/24/2007): Total donations now add up to about $630. Christmas is right around the corner! I hope to get some last minute donations before Christmas.

Donation Update (1/2/2007): I had hoped to raise $1000 by Christmas, but I am very happy to have raised $720 so far. That is an astonishing amount of money donated mostly by people who don’t know me.

Donation Update (1/11/2008):
$870 raised! See this post for more exclamation.

Donation Update (1/22/2008): $1000 raised! Fundraising is complete. Thanks everyone.

You can make a donation to my genome-decoding campaign below using the PayPal widget OR you can go to my first post and use the PayPal “Donate” button near the bottom of the post to “name your own donation” amount. Fundraising complete.

update 12/11/07 - i'm currently seeking sponsorship from pharma & biotech companies. it will help me raise the rest of the money.
  • The film Gattaca comes to mind. I'm curious. How do they know its your salivia? What if you took my salivia and submitted under your name without me knowing, would you have a sneaky peek into my genome?
  • Andrew Meyer
I could do that but only if I were in cahoots with you.

The quantity of saliva needed for the test is like 3 teaspoons. That's a lot of saliva.
