$1000 Raised! Just Ordered My 23andMe DNA Kit

by Andrew Meyer on January 22, 2008

It took about 1 month, 5 days to raise the $1000 but we did it.

I just ordered my 23andMe saliva collection kit a couple of minutes ago. Here is proof of the order confirmation email:

How long until I get my hands on my genome results?

It will take a couple of days for the saliva collection kit to get here, a couple of minutes to fill the tube with saliva, a couple of days to ship it back to 23andMe and than roughly 4-6 weeks (maybe sooner) until they run my saliva through their machines and get some results out of it.

At the longest, that puts us somewhere near the end of February or early March before I get my hands on my genome results. Who knows? I’ve heard of people getting their results back in 2-3 weeks time.

If you are new to this blog this post titled “Help Me Decode My Genome by Christmas” kicked this whole genome-decoding thing off. And, this timeline tracks my fundraising efforts since December 6, 2007.

I’m excited about exploring my results and fiddling around with the 23andMe service. It’s going to be fun and I’m going to share every step of the way with you the reader.

About a month ago I put out a call to other saliva-spitting bloggers like Lara at LaunchSquad, Mark Fletcher at Wingedpig and Gary Wolf at The Quantified Self.

It will be fun to see what the other saliva-spitting bloggers discover and what they think about the service.

For instance, it looks like another saliva-spitting blogger Andrew Scheidecker created a way to grab your raw personal genome data from 23andMe’s site so you can use it how you wish. Interesting. Maybe 23andMe should provide an official data download feature.

By the way, it looks like 23andMe has joined the blogosphere, too. Check out their new blog called the spittoon.

  • Congratulations! How exciting for you. :) To be honest, I didn't know if you'd make and am very impressed you did.
  • Thanks, Hsien. I'm just as surprised as you.
  • Dan Levy
the first post on their blog says you can now download your raw data directly from the site
  • Congratulations! I look forward to hearing about your experience.
  • @ Blaine - Thanks, I'll make sure to post plenty of genealogy-related stuff for you

@ Dan - Good spot, they added that tidbit after I posted. Probably because of the comment Hsien Lei left on their blog.
