Meet Larry Lessig

by Andrew Meyer on February 22, 2008

draft lessigUpdate: Lessig just announced on his blog that he has decided not to run for Congress and instead devote his energies to running the Change Congress movement from outside Congress. He explains his decision in this 5min video.

I don’t get excited about people running for Congress.

But, I have to say that I’m completely blown away with this Lessig guy. He is a refreshing slap across the face.

Who is he?

In short, Lessig is currently a Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and founder of the school’s Center for Internet and Society. He has a massive (and massively interesting) bio that you should view here because there is no room for it in this post.

He just launched his Change Congress movement this month and because of it has been pressured by many close colleagues, friends and Facebook groups to run for Congress.

Lessig’s Change Congress movement wants to change how Washington works by trying to remove the influence of money on public policy.

The movement details three things that will start Washington in the right direction:

1. No $$$ from lobbyist or PACs (Political Action Committees)

2. Ban earmarks

3. Support public finance

He is a 10min video launching Change Congress and mentioning a possible Congress run:

Lessig makes it very clear that the current Washington system not the people plays the largest role in allowing money (aka corruption) to influence public policy.

Here is an excellent lecture he gave on corruption (warning: its about an hour long):

Note: Lessig hasn’t announced he will run for Congress yet. He says he will make the decision by March 1. Until then, check out his new site or join the Draft Lessig for Congress Facebook group.

Also, check out Lessig’s personal blog or OpenCongress’ blog for more.

Update: Anyone interested in running for California’s 44th District? Contact Jason in the comments below.

  • I like Lessig's thinking.

We need someone down here to run a similar campaign against our Douche Ken Calvert.

He keeps getting fatter and douchier from lobbyist money he uses to hire prostitutes. I want to walk down the street to his house and yell at him.

I'm pretty sure anyone could beat Calvert if they ran against him. Anyone out there reading this interested? I will help you. Signs, ron-paul like graffiti, internet presence... lemme know.
  • tuftsmania
    i'm in for moustaches.

he doesn't have a moustache, but he has black 501s. in.

    fuck calvert, that glutton
  • Well Chris,

I don't ACTUALLY have anything against Calvert for being fat. That's just icing on the cake.
To get a feel for how much of a douche he is, check out the video of his latest floor statement on his homepage:
    http://calvert.house.gov/

I also forgot to mention above that I live in the 44th District of California. I'm serious about taking down Calvert. I think we could do it. Any middle-aged aspiring politicians out there?
Seriously, holler at me. I'll help you out.
I knew Calvert was a douche but the level of douchery wasn't as clear to me until I looked into him a little bit more today.

Excerpt from Calvert's 'Personal' section on Wikipedia (backed up with sources):

"In 1993 Calvert was arrested for soliciting a prostitute.[10][11] The Riverside Press-Enterprise went to court to force the Corona police to release the police report. In that report, the arresting officer wrote:

"I observed a male subject in the driver seat... As I made my way to the driver door, a female immediately sat up straight in the front passenger seat. It appeared as if her head was originally laying in the driver's lap... Both subjects were extremely nervous. I noticed that the male subject was placing his penis into his unzipped dress slacks, and was trying to hide it with his untucked dress shirt... The male subject started his vehicle and placed it into drive and proceeded to leave. I ordered him three times to turn off the vehicle, and he finally stopped and complied... The male identified himself as Kenneth Stanton Calvert... and stated 'We're just talking that's all, nothing else.' ...I spoke with Linberg separately. I asked her if she had ever been arrested for anything, and she said, 'Yes, for prostitution and under the influence of heroin.' Linberg said she had last 'shot up' approximately one week prior and is currently on methadone."

Also in 1993, Calvert and his former wife, Robin, were divorced after 15 years of marriage. His ex-wife later accused him of not paying the alimony arranged. In addition, his father committed suicide. After these experiences, Calvert said that the experiences "have helped me mature greatly... and become a better person."[12]"
  • Wow. Calvert been there since 1993. See his OpenCongress profile for more.
  • ahahaha
I posted an anonymous comment on his opencongress page!

I would almost feel bad for him ...
if he wasn't such a douche.
  • Francois Cevert
Money influences how I spend my day (working not playing). It influences what I wear, what I eat, where I go...why shouldn't it play a role in government? In fact it does play a role -> tax and spend seems to be the major role of government. It is nuts to believe there is a way to have money not be involved.
  • Francois, Congress is more about representation than anything. It's true that money will always be involved with anything humans do. But, democratic representation shouldn't be influenced by who donated to your campaign.
