Demo 23andMe with the “Mendel Family”

by Andrew Meyer on February 23, 2008

gregor mendelI sent my saliva tube to 23andMe about two weeks ago, which means I won’t be able to start exploring my genome for another couple weeks.

In the meantime, I’m still trying to recuperate from my record-setting saliva spitting.

23andMe’s blog the spittoon announced three pretty cool things yesterday:

First, they added a paternal ancestry feature so you can track your paternal lines along with your maternal lines.

Second, the Gene Journal just added 30 more conditions and traits (Yay! More unfortunate predispositions to track).

And, third, they are letting anyone interested in 23andMe to sign-up for a demo account.

The demo account will let you explore their services features using genetic data from the “Mendel Family.” Go sign-up for a demo account here.

Want another reasons to sign-up for a demo account besides for getting to peep the Mendel Family’s (their fake) genetic data?

If you sign-up for a demo account I can share my actual 23andMe genetic profile with you when I get it (only a few more weeks).

You heard me right. I can share my actual genetic profile with you.

  • Nice post, and very interesting.. Good job andrew
  • some interesting comments over here, I just loved reading this article and the comments, loved Motorsport experience's comment the most! just keep going.
  • I rem, 23andMe said something like, which thumb we put on the top, in general, and what I found that their conclusion was quiet true, for this small observation. So, for this feature, do they have this big data to compare the biological data. . . I'm already checking the services, lets see where it goes...
  • Hey Andrew,

This is interesting. I can't wait to see whether I've any genetic connections to George Wacker Bush. I don't know whether I'll be happy or sad after that.
  • Daniel, it's an interesting feature, huh?

I'm planning to share my genetic results on this blog but this feature lets me really share it.
  • Hi Andrew, interesting reporting. I hope you don't mind if I sign up just to see your genome... ;-) That's an pretty weird feature I have to say. Make sure that no health insurance signs up to get your data... Well, this has to produce some follow up, I just have not much time right now.
